NERICA rice and other farmer produced quality seed
Expected impact – set out in the business plan October 2009
- To increase NaCRRI capacity for basic seed production to 5 tonnes per year
- To increase capacity of targeted seed companies to produce 1,400 tonnes by establishing functional linkages with out-growers
- To stabilize product demand
650 smallholder seed growers will be linked directly to the seed companies. These smallholders will increase their income from seed production. It will increase the capacity to produce and deliver large volumes of improved quality seed, making it available to approximately 100,000 smallholder rice producers who will earn income from the 70,000 tonnes of rice produced: this is more than a quarter of the rice currently produced and potentially enough to make Uganda self-sufficient at current demand levels.

When we come to the smallholder farmers growing rice as a commodity and/or food source - not bulking it as seed - rice looks attractive over other crops. If we assume that each household plants 0.2 hectare of NERICA, the expected average increase in household income will be US$152. Research has shown that income from maize or beans was only 41% of the income from the same area planted to rice.
