Working with small-scale farmers who save their own seeds, this project aims to increase productivity by using a mycoherbicide to control the parasitic weed Striga and encouraging seed priming through the adoption of Gro-Plus.
The Stopstriga programme hopes to minimise crop losses by enabling small-scale farmers to prime (soak with added nutrients) their own seeds and then treat them with a proven mycoherbicide, with a target of 48,000 households using the technology by April 2011. In September 2010, Real IPM started promoting Gro-Plus, small bags of a fertiliser which is dissolved in water and used to soak seeds (seed priming) before sowing.
