RIU - Research Into Use

StopStriga and Gro-Plus

Working with small-scale farmers who save their own seeds, this project aims to increase productivity by using a mycoherbicide to control the parasitic weed Striga and encouraging seed priming through the adoption of Gro-Plus.

The Stopstriga programme hopes to minimise crop losses by enabling small-scale farmers to prime (soak with added nutrients) their own seeds and then treat them with a proven mycoherbicide, with a target of 48,000 households using the technology by April 2011. In September 2010, Real IPM started promoting Gro-Plus, small bags of a fertiliser which is dissolved in water and used to soak seeds (seed priming) before sowing. MORE

Farmers from Western Kenya talk about the impact of Striga on their livelihoods. Colins Wanyama and Henry Wainwright of The Real IMP Company explain how the RIU Best Bet will work. February 2010 (5:41)

The expected impact of StopStriga and Gro-Plus was set out in the business plans. This will be replaced over time with project reports on the achieved impact.
