FIPS-Africa works closely with seed, fertilizer and other input supply companies, and national agricultural research centres, to create demand for new varieties of crops such as maize, beans, cowpea, pigeon pea, cassava and sweet potatoes, and improved fertilizer blends, in East Africa. It will also integrate outputs from selected successful agricultural research projects, including from the DFID-funded RNRRS to improve soil, crop and livestock management.
Links with private sector companies offer income-generating opportunities for FIPS-Africa's agricultural advisors and helps ensure sustainable delivery of farm inputs beyond the period of RIU funding.
FIPS-Africa's methodology will be reinforced by the Shujaaz youth communication initiative, developed by Well Told Story Ltd., which combines three powerful and accessible youth-focused media:
- nationally distributed monthly comic books
- daily syndicated FM radio programmes
- interactive SMS
This will provide young people with ideas and knowledge to generate income through agricultural activities. The Shujaaz initiative will not only raise awareness and create demand for FIPS-Africa's services but will also catalyse and support the development of new networks of service providers amongst the Kenyan youths.
