ShujaazFM - agricultural messages for young people
Expected impact - set out in the business plan October 2009

ShujaazFM was expected to reach around 8 million Kenyan young people with the monthly comics and complementary radio and television programmes. However as a result of addition investment from GTZ the circulation has increased to 600,000 copies - making it the largest circulation publication in Kenya - readership is expected to be nearer to 12 million.

There is also evidence that the reach of ShujaazFM is extending beyond the 11-18 audience that was initially anticipated. The SMS text responses come, in the main, from people in their 20s.

In September 2010 some preliminary statistical information was produced to coincide with the production of the 5 millionth ShujaazFM:

  • DJ B sasa? You know that ile idea ya ku-make chakula ya kuku imeiva sana huku kwetu. Mimi na boyz wangu tumegundua hiyo method na tume-decide kutega hizo termites na tunalisha nazo hizi kuku zetu before tuuzie ma-customers. Its easier and cheaper than chakula ya duka. Thanks to you man, ule-uplift life yetu up sana.

Hi DJ B, the idea on making chicken feed has become popular at our place. My friends and I have decided to trap the termites, feed our chickens and sell the rest to our customers. It's easier and cheaper than commercial chicken feed. Thank you for uplifting our lives.

DJ Boyie is one of the four characters in ShujaazFM and the presenter of the ShujaazFM FM radio. Up to 1,000 sms responses are received each week.
