Bio-pesticide registration for fruit and cocoa growers
Partners

The DFID-funded Crop Protection Programme was involved in facilitating the necessary legislation in Ghana; and the DFID-funded Crops Post Harvest Programme developed management systems in export horticultural crops; CABI UK has developed IPM systems in cocoa and they will be key partners involved as originators of the research and will provide technical backstopping.

The Real IPM Company and Kenya Biologics are biocontrol agent production companies in Kenya and have commercial experience of registration. EPA will supervise efficacy trials and EPA and Pest Control Products Board will share 'best practice' as the responsible regulatory authorities.

The willingness and goodwill between the Kenyan and the Ghanaian partners is more than could have been hoped for and there are high hopes that there will be further biological control agents (BCAs) registered and marketed in Ghana.

The partnerships have worked very well and none have been dropped. As the time frame of the project was short this focused everyone's attention in achieving the aims. This was aided by the fact that each partner was chosen with a key function in mind and was given a clear mandate.

The main new partners added have been the pesticide distributors interested in marketing BCAs - Wienco and Agropharm West Africa Ltd. These were identified and contacted by Real IPM using their networks.

The team has also been in discussion with a number of other companies interested in using their products.
