Discussion paper 12
Recent years have seen several companies entering into the organised retailing of fresh fruits and vegetables in India. This paper explores the emerging food retail scenario in the country by looking at procurement patterns of these retailers and their impact on farmers. The study found that farmers selling their produce through organised retailers benefit by way of higher prices.
Another benefit, in the case of some retailer-farmer relationships, is that retailers set up demonstration farms, nurseries and offer technical support to enhance the producer’s capacity for quality production. This paper explores the emerging pattern of retailer-farmer relationships to see if there are any lessons to be learnt from putting new knowledge into use.
