Poultry sector to get a boost in Sierra Leone
10 September 2010

RIU Sierra Leone is working on developing the country's poultry sector. They have just released a report from the recent Poultry Sector Validation Workshop, which took place on 25 August 2010 in Freetown.

David Suale, head of RIU in Sierra Leone said:
"RIU Sierra Leone has agreed to facilitate the action plan to take forward poultry sector developments in the country. This will involve poultry production and marketing training; supporting the establishment of a poultry producers group to push for better performance in the sector; and supporting the reactivation of existing hatchery facilities. We are also delighted that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Njala University are to collaborate with the executives of poultry associations to identify appropriate private sector partners to aid with feed production.

Finally, inspired by the success by RIU Tanzania to change the VAT and exercise rules on feed and hatchery equipment, we will lobby for a more favourable tax regime in Sierre Leone by the next budget." RIU will be reporting on the achievement of these targets over the next six months."
