Locally produced fish meal delayed by strike action
29 October 2010

One of the problems common amongst RIU livestock programmes is the lack of quality animal feed. Work is on-going in Nigeria to address this in the aquaculture sector.

One of the goals of the RIU Nigeria supported Aquaculture Innovation Platform is to produce fish feed locally which will be 30% cheaper than that which is currently available. This is either imported or made locally from expensive imported ingredients such as fish meal.

The Platform partners are jointly working towards production of the first batch of locally manufactured fish meal made from locally available low-value tilapia and other fish species, such as clupeids. Two local animal feed companies are eagerly awaiting the release of the fish meal samples for incorporation into their fish feed.

However, as a result of a prolonged strike by workers in all national agricultural research institutes in Nigeria, work in two of the partner agencies - the National Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) and the Nigerian Institute for Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR) - has been shut down since July 2010. The strike has affected general operations at both organisations. While the scientists working on the fish meal programme have continued to pursue the planned activities, their work has been constrained by the workers strike. Other partners in the Aquaculture Innovation Platform are:

  • the Federal Institute for Industrial Research (FIIRO)
  • the Federal Department of Fisheries (FDF)
  • the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN)
  • Talon Nig Ltd
