Report from Day One of the WHO conference
25 November 2010

In the second of his RIUtv film reports from the 3rd World Health Organization International Conference on Neglected Zoonotic Diseases, Nik Wood talks with some of the delegates who have a specific interest in the RIU-backed SOS-Uganda programme. The conference this year has a strong emphasis on community-led interventions. So the SOS programme is highly relevant to the discussions.

Professor Anthony Mbonye, Health Commissioner for Uganda, talks about the way that the SOS-Uganda programme mobilized different sections of the community and key national and international stakeholders to combat the control of sleeping sickness. He suggests that the integrated community-led approach, trialled in Uganda, has the potential for export to other countries and other contexts.

Anne Holm Rannaleet from IK Investment Partners talks about how her organization was drawn into SOS-Uganda. She then explained how her company became a major resource base offering private sector skills, usually associated with investment management, to support the efficiency and effectiveness of the programme. She also explains how effective partnership working, planning which utilized people's skills sets, and creative and original thinking contributed to the success of SOS-Uganda.
