DRC explores RIU Rwanda-backed warrantage model
17 December 2010

The RIU Rwanda-backed warrantage model has created a great deal of interest from within the World Food Programme, DFID, at the highest levels of the Ministry of Agriculture in Rwanda and now from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

IFDC-Catalyst, a not for profit public international organization concerned with agricultural sustainability and regional project partner of RIU Rwanda, is now interested in scaling-out the programme in the Kisindi locality in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Augustin Mutijima, RIU Rwanda coordinator, said:
"IFDC-Catalyst organized on 7 December 2010 a visit to the RIU Rwanda-backed initiative with some micro-finance institutions from DRC to see if they can make the scheme work with the rice farmers they are trying to support.

This is timely for us as RIU is being encouraged by the Rwandan Government to consider other crops for inclusion in the warantage programme".
