Aqua Shop franchisees recruited
The first six Aqua Shop franchisees have been recruited and they will soon be ready for business. FARM-Africa's research identified six franchise areas in Western Kenya which they felt had the greatest potential for growth but which also had significant fish farming units already in operation.

Ms Mwanaheri Nyangalio, a farmer from Ikwiriri, Rufiji District, Tanzania signs up for KuKuDeal. A large number of female farmers have benefited from getting capital, inputs and full advisory services under this innovative poultry contract farming initiative.

Rwanda warrantage pilot takes off
RIU Rwanda, NYAMIG (the commercial arm of the RIU Rwanda-backed Maize Innovation Platform) and Duterimbere IMF (a local bank) have completed the first pilot phase of the warrantage programme in Nyagatare District, Eastern Province, Rwanda.

Hooked on fish farming - FARM-Africa builds demand for Aqua Shops
FARM-Africa is developing a network of Aqua Shop outlets in six locations in western Kenya. This will provide inputs including fish feed, fingerlings, technical advice and market linkages to up to 1,000 smallholder farmers interested in using their ponds to set up their own fish farming businesses.

World Food Programme - 825 tonne contract boosts Rwanda maize producers
Nyagatare Maize Investment Group (NYAMIG) the commercial arm of the RIU Rwanda backed Maize Innovation Platform has received an additional contract to supply 825 tonnes of maize to the World Food Programme (WFP), following the first contract for 400 tonnes successfully completed a few months ago.

Grace Jokthan of RIU Nigeria is to represent the RIU at a workshop on gender and market-oriented agriculture being held in Addis Ababa from 31 January-2 February 2011.

35 poultry farmers from across Sierra Leone started their training in agri-business entrepreneurship last week. In addition the trainers, Nehemiah Project International Ministries Inc, will also provide access to micro-finance.

Ghana Pesticide Registrar gives bio-pesticide efficacy trial the thumbs up!
A fundamental principle for regulatory authorities approving crop protection products is 'do they work?' This is true whether they are reviewing conventional pesticides or biological controls. To answer this question efficacy trials are conducted by independent organisations to evaluate the products presented for registration by the manufacturer.
