RIU-backed armyworm control programmes commended in Tanzania
The RIU-backed armyworm control programme was commended recently at the 17th meeting of the National Plant Protection Advisory Committee (NPPAC). This influential body, which was meeting in Dar es Salaam, invited Eco Agri Consult to make a presentation on the new biological control initiative to manage armyworm in Tanzania.

25,000 farmers buy Gro-Plus
RIU has been following the Gro-Plus trial over the past few months. As recently reported, the numbers of farmers who have registered to participate in the trial has exceeded 53,000.

BBC World Television showcases FIPS-Africa and Shujaaz.
A new flag-ship television series being made for the BBC's international television channel have just completed filming the RIU-supported enterprises FIPS-Africa and ShujaazFM.

Yam harvest set to feed 131,000 for a year
Almost a million disease-free seed yam will be produced as a result of the RIU-supported activities in Nigeria. When these seeds are harvested this will equate to enough yams to feed 131,000 people for a year. This is 8,000 tonnes of ware yam (yams for eating).

50,000 packs of Gro-Plus distributed to farmers for mass trial
Last month we reported that over 50,000 people had signed up for the Gro-Plus trial. The trial packs are now in the hands of the famers in western Kenya and now they are waiting for the rains to get their seeds primed and planted.

FIPS-Africa cross-fertilizes ideas with other RIU-backed programmes
Following a visit to Rwanda by FIPS-Africa, RIU-Rwanda decided to adapt FIPS' approach beginning with the growing season commencing in October 2010 - known as 'season A'.

Private sector mainstreams work of RIU Nigeria
Four private companies are collaborating with RIU Nigeria in exploring market enterprise opportunities in agricultural input supply and advisory services related to RIU-assisted value chains. This means that the long-term sustainability of these interventions is looking very likely.
