Natural Resources Knowledge

The objective of DFID's Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (RNRRS) was to generate new knowledge and to promote its uptake and application such that the livelihoods of poor people are improved through better management of renewable natural resources. The knowledge and information generated by these research programmes and projects is included in reports and published papers produced by each of the individual projects.

The links below provide further information on the different programmes involved in the RNRRS as well as the Research for Development web site.

RNRRS Programmes:

Natural Resources System Programme (NRSP)

NRSP’s purpose was ‘to deliver new knowledge that enables poor people who are largely dependent on the NR-base to improve their livelihoods’.  To achieve this, NRSP focused on knowledge generation (research) on what changes – bio-physical, economic, institutional and social - in the management of the NR-base could enhance and sustain the livelihoods of the poor.  It developed its strategy to support this.

Livestock Production Programme (LPP)

The LPP funded, managed and promoted research aimed at improving people's livelihoods through livestock. The aim of the Livestock Production Programme (LPP) was to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Goals through adoption of a livelihoods approach. The programme addressed issues of significance at regional, agro-ecological zone levels faced by 5 groups of resource-poor livestock keepers:

  • smallscale milk producers;
  • crop/livestock farmers;
  • smallstock keepers;
  • landless livestock keepers; and
  • pastoralists and transhumants.

Animal Health Programme (AHP) The Animal Health Programme aimed to increase the productivity of agricultural systems by improving the supply and value of animal products as well as the contribution of livestock to crop production. The AHP focused on projects that created benefits for poor people through the improved management of livestock diseases. It supported the research process from technical development to adaptation and promotion of results so that developmental benefits could be assessed and implemented in target countries.

Crop Post Harvest Programme (CPHP) CPHP projects addressing post-harvest constraints experienced by poor households in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Outputs of these projects were aimed at different types of decision-maker: national and international research programmes, government, NGOs/CBOs, agribusinesses, traders, exporters, farmers and consumers. Outputs included:
  • Technologies
  • Protocols
  • Strategies
  • Policy recommendations

Crop Protection Programme (CPP) The CPP focused on the development and promotion of socially and environmentally acceptable technologies to reduce crop losses caused by pests. Protecting crops from pests through the application of socially acceptable and environmentally benign technologies contributes to poverty elimination, sustainable livelihoods and environmental sustainability by:
  • stabilising and increasing food supplies
  • reduced production costs leading to cheaper food
  • improving food quality and safety
  • improving market opportunities and market access
  • safer production methods decreasing health risks
  • using labour more efficiently

Plant Sciences Programme (PSP)

The Plant Sciences Programme developed and tested methods to reduce the effects of drought, low soil fertility, pests and diseases on crop production by research in two areas: crop physiology, and agronomy and plant breeding. Themes also included: Transgenic (genetically modified) crops, Molecular markers in support of plant breeding, and Participatory research, including seed priming and plant breeding.

Forestry Research Programme (FRP)

The FRP focused on the eradication of poverty by supporting research on priority developmental programmes of the forest-dependent poor. Forestry themes included:

  • Tropical timber trees
  • Multipurpose tree species
  • Trees in land use systems
  • Forest management
  • Non-timber forest products
  • Peri-Urban Issues
  • Programme systems

Aquaculture and Fish Genetics Programme (AFGRP)

The purpose was to improve knowledge of aquatic stocks and their selection, enhancement and culture to generate sustainable productive benefits of aquatic resources for poor people. AFGRP's research was brought together under several major themes:

  • Seed Production
  • Aquatic Animal Health
  • Markets and Systems

Post Harvest Fisheries Programme (PHFRP)

The vision of the Post-Harvest Fisheries Research Programme was to improve the livelihoods and food security of the poor within the post-harvest fisheries sector by:

  • Working with the poor to identify constraints to better livelihoods and improved food security
  • Commissioning high-quality research to develop methods and tools to overcome constraints
  • Effectively promoting the results of research to the point where they are adopted for the benefit of the poor.

Fisheries Management Science Programme (FMSP)

FMSP focused on research on marine and inland fish capture, aquaculture, and enhancement of fisheries management. Sustainable use of the world's oceans, coastal areas and inland water bodies is viewed as being critical for global food security, employment and income generation. Programme themes included:

  • Information to inform management-research and influence policy.
  • Information requirements for including poor fishers in the assessment and management of their fisheries.
  • Fisheries assessment methods to inform management.
  • Pro-poor capture fisheries management strategies.
  • Pro-poor enhancement fisheries management strategies.

  TECA, or Techniology for Agriculture, is an FAO initiative that aims at improving access to information and knowledge about available proven technologies in order to enhance their adoption in agriculture, livestock, fisheries and forestry thus contributing to food security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
TECA is a platform for a network of agricultural technology repositories where knowledge is maintained, accessed and shared.
