RIU - Research Into Use

Strategy and approaches

Key purpose, approach and role
The key purpose of RIU Tanzania is to explore ways of improving local innovation capacity for increased use of research, new knowledge and technologies in developing profitable agribusiness enterprises.

The programme works through innovation platforms to facilitate respective stakeholders to work together to identify system blockages; experiment with various solutions to overcome the blockages; exploit innovation opportunities for increased productivity and profitability; and generate learning in putting research into use.

The program mobilizes relevant stakeholders around a problem or an opportunity, builds relevant capacities and facilitates creation of the necessary linkages.

Strategic objectives
Although its processes are experimental, the program is governed by a framework and intervention logic stipulated in the country strategy. However, since changes have occurred as a result of the review conducted in early 2009, some of the approaches and interventions suggested in the country strategy have been revised.

The programme now has a clear strategic focus for the period from November 2009 to June 2011 with a key focus on the four thrusts initially identified for the country.

Key expected outputs, milestones and indicative activities under each thrust are also articulated. During the given period, RIU Tanzania is focusing on one immediate objective - maximise the poverty reducing impact of RNRRS and other research outputs and, by doing so, significantly increase understanding of how the promotion and widespread use of research can contribute to poverty reduction and economic growth.

There are strategic objectives associated with the four thematic trusts:
