RIU - Research Into Use

About

RIU Zambia was established in November 2008.

It is the youngest of the six Research Into Use Africa Country Programmes. The first members of the country team were recruited in October 2008. Activities started, in earnest, in early 2009 following development of the implementation plan and work plan.

However, following the mid-term review and the subsequent technical review, the urgent need to act on the recommendations arose. The recommendations from the review looked for:
  • a new lean and decentralized focused organizational structure
  • an unambiguous repositioning of the programme as a research project.

One of the issues that RIU had to overcome was the unrealistic expectations by stakeholders: they expected RIU to act like a traditional donor organization - providing capital items for example.

The key priority until 2011 is to test a series of interventions to make an impact on getting conservation agriculture research into use in Zambia. There is also a second, smaller project which is working with rice producers.
