RIU Tanzanian poultry enterprise update

RIUtv returns to Tanzania to report on the latest developments in the RIU-backed poultry programme, which has attracted backing from the Tanzanian President. 3,500 farmers are currently involved, producing some 600,000 chickens a year. Vera Mugittu, head of RIU Tanzania explains that the businesses need to work at a scale (100 to 300 chickens per farmer) to get farmers out of poverty. The contract farming KuKuDeal provides inputs and guarantees markets to hatcheries and farmers alike. RIUtv hears from Maimuna Mkongea, a champion of the initiative; Omari 'Bongoman' Juma a poultry farmer; Festo Blaegele a hatchery owner who talks about the impact of KuKuDeal on his business but also its impact on vulnerable people and women; Goodluck Macha, feed manufacturer; Christina David, poultry champion; His Excellency Jakaya Mrisho Kilwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania - who says RIU has done poultry keeping much better than other programmes.
